Hey Nighthawk lovers, I'm making plans for another West Coast run (Seattle this time) on Ol' Yeller this summer, but she isn't as young as she used to be, and I want her to ride as trouble free as she did last year.
As the subject line says, I'm thinking of changing the valve cover gasket because it's been leaking a little bit on the left rear side. Now a good tightening may fix or reduce the problem to the point that it's a non-issue, but I've got a couple of questions. 1. Those are just plastic plugs in the bolts, right? Is there a clean way of getting them out without damaging them? 2. If I re-torque the bolts, how do I know when I've got it right? I just looked at the manual, chapter seven, and it doesn't seem to mention anything about torque. It's all matter-of-fact, as in removal order: bolts, sealing washer, bolts, gasket. That's about it. 3. Any recommendations on suppliers, brands, etc? 4. Any dressing for the new gasket, upper side and lower? 5. How do I know how much torque I've got on an allen wrench, anyway? Anybody done this? For those who don't know me, Ol' Yeller is a '96 750 Nighthawk.
