If the carbs are dirty enough messing with the idle screw will need to be
done when cold and then again once it warms up. As for the clacking I'd
suspect the clutch. The cork friction material turns into linoleum after 30
years then starts cracking and falling apart. Investigate the issue before
riding more you don't want to get in a situation where you can't disengage
the clutch.
