Thank you,

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] S&P700

Not a new financial product--it's short for Spain and Portugal on a BMW F700GS.
I tried to rent a Honda but all they had was Beemers. So I've been on one for
4 days now, and here are some thoughts.

No choke and no warming up. I like it. This is old hat for you guys who own EFI
bikes.
More vibration through the seat than Ol' Yeller.
I can flatfoot it, and the seat is narrow enough that it doesn't want to pull
my hips out of their sockets. Cool.
Love that dashboard. Time, temperature, fuel level, current gear out of six.
I've got to upgrade my Garmin. This thing talks to the bike and tells me when I
should push the gas icon to find out where the nearest gas station is.
Gas is $1.65 a liter. Thank God I'm just on vacation.
Noisier and chuggier than my NH. I guess that's because it's got 2 cylinders?
Wide handlebars make me feel like I'm on a dirt bike again. Not so easy to make
U-turns.
Gas cap is under my wife's right knee, so I fill it up without removing the
tank bag. I'm all about that.
"Gas tank" is plastic, so so much for the magnetic tank bag I brought.
Tank bag they loaned me has a full-page-sized map holder velcroed on top. Now
that I like.
The filler tube is the same size as the gasoline nozzle. Not real easy to know
when it's getting near full, and these European nozzles don't lock, so I'm
afraid to test if they have auto shut-off.
I love putting both helmets in that top case. Since the helmets have no rings,
that's necessary.
Side bags are cool, but when they're off the bike and on the hotel room floor
they don't work at all. Outside is flat; backside is not even close.
Roll on throttle response is ...wow! No need to drop a gear to pass on this
thing.
Windshield is pathetic. Do they make a taller one? The wind stream misses my
chest but it blasts me in the face.
The Schuberth modular helmet I got with it is to die for, but this has nothing
to do with the bike.
I need some kind of highway peg for a second foot position, plus a cramp buster
and/or throttle lock. This is not the bike's fault.
The kickstand doesn't go down unless the bike is rocked over to the right.
Makes me nervous every time I do it.
Lisbon, Portugal is basically a sh@thole and I've got it parked on the street.
I'll be sleeping light tonight.

Am I likely to buy a Beemer when I get home? Not yet. But I once saw an NC700X
kitted out for touring and I could take another look at that.
