No need for any kind of spring compressor the rear shock units will only expand to a certain length, and I'm pretty sure you can unhook one side at a time to get the tail cowl off so no need to prop up the back end. As for torque on bolts, my general rule is use locktite on things that need to stay put, and keep torque values down since the plastic and aluminum parts will strip just from looking at them too hard. Enjoy your new bike I had a 1992 NH750 for my first bike and they are a great all around package. The only things I would suggest is upgrading the fork springs, stainless brake line, jet kit, and better rear shocks. But I recommend those items on pretty much any bike. If you want to jet it let me know and I'll dig up what my final settings were.
