I second on the 2x4 under the rear wheel if you have a center stand.  If 
you don't be very careful when you are screwing in the bolts.  Before my 
center stand I cross threaded one side and had to re-thread.  Not a good 
thing.  It's really easy to do if you have the center stand.  just put the 
2x4 behind the rear wheel and spin the wheel backwards and firmly push on 
the 2x4.  You're not trying to life the wheel just lock it in place.  I've 
replaced my shocks and the rear cowl this way.
 
I also second lock tight versus over torqueing - even if you set the 
torque at a recommended level your bolt could still come loose.  I use blue 
Lock Tight on even bolt on my 96.  Stuff just rattles loose on a bike.
