Nice guys! Thanks, this really makes things bright and clear.... As for the original conundrum with turn signal, relays, etc..... I ended up receiving the replacement relay in the mail today, wired it up and lo (and behold), everything works!
So maybe it was a combination of the battery being low, which in turn may have caused the relay to short (or become weakened over time). Anyways, the original problem seems to have fixed itself - everything works again correctly. Back to riding!
