Glenn, look at the GPS and see what the power input requirements are and post it. Kurt is right that is it is getting 12V then it is a not getting more amps than it needs to run that is why it is going dead. Most electronics don't need more than about 2 amps at 5 volts. So with a 12V input the current draw should be really low. I'd bet you just had a bad connection to the power source.
