Another trick is to stick a thin screwdriver or a pencil down the spark plug hole and feel the piston as it pushes the screwdriver/pencil further out the hole as it nears tdc. When it starts to travel downward you know you've gone too far and simply reverse the rotation of the crankshaft and bring it back to when the object you are using is at its furthest distance out of the hole
