No shims; the bike ('84 V30 Magna) has rocker arms.
I don't know about getting out of whack, but I thought that they needed to
be adjusted periodically to make sure that they don't gap open, leading to
blowback and worse. Since the valves are not self adjusting and the bike
has 34K miles on it, I thought I might do things right for once in my life
and actually see what adjusting valves is all about. Since you have to
remove the tank, radiator, coils, frame cross member, etc. to do the job, I
would much rather just throw the carbs back on. I decided to practice on
the parts bike, like I said, because I have no big reason to put it back
together right if I find I'm biting off more than I can chew. So far, maybe
I am.
I'm also going to change the fork seals. Never done this job either. I've
been riding the thing with no oil and no pressure in the forks since I
bought it years ago. Doesn't really bother me, but it won't cost much to
put Chinese seals in it. A guy says he'll trade me his '94 PC800 for it,
and this sounds like a trade that's worth doing. I rode his bike last year
this time when I was looking around at PC800s. He wanted too much for it so
I let it slide, but now he got back in touch with me and wants to do the
deal. I'm trying to fix the few things it needs to get the deal as close as
possible to an even trade.
