Adjusting the valve clearances can be done at home fairly easily. Anything more than that can also be done at home, if you know what you are doing and have the tools (thinking about the valve spring compression tool in particular here), but I don't think there's anything easy about it. I haven't heard too many people on this list talking about doing top end work in the years I've been following it.
