I did this a few months ago. I had read somewhere else that you could bend the tabs instead of cutting them. It barely worked. It was so tight that I cracked the back of the bulb. The bulb box said that the light would still work with a crack but at reduced performance. I suspect that the crack only is in the outer layer because the bulb is quite bright. I covered the crack with some silicone and will see how long it lasts.
Next bulb replacement, I'll be cutting off the tabs. They are for the old bulb which doesn't seem to be available anywhere. I don't think I'll ever need them again.
