I replaced the bushing on my NH over the weekend and had a similar experience to Matthew......
The bushing was worn completely through and the push rod was wearing a deep grove in the bracket itself. My downshifting is about 50% improved with the new bushing. I still have to "blip" the throttle (as Old Wrench indicated in his posting), which I have been doing as a work around to this all along........
