They had an Australian photographer as part of the crew. Not only are there
black and white actual photos but moving 'video' of their ship being crushed by
the ice. Shackleton's own book is called 'South' but there are other books
written since and documentaries on TV, absolutely incredible. Five of the crew
'sailed' in a 22 foot life boat from Elephant Island, a sheer rock of ice where
the remaining crew lived for however long, to South Georgia, 800 miles away.
There three of them hiked overland for 35 hours straight to a Norwegian Whaling
Station. The interior of South Georgia was unchartered and no one had ever
crossed overland before. It is all mountains and ravines, all ice and snow.
Frank Worlsey, a New Zealander and Shackleton's ship captain, navigated the
lifeboat that 800 miles with only a few sightings of the sun. At one point they
thought they saw land in the distance but it was a 100 foot wave. One man had
to be kept leaning over the bow to chip off the ice that was constantly forming
and sinking the boat. He was held on by his boots and had to be pulled back in
before he froze to death. They did that on a constant rotation for most of the
journey. The name of their ship that was crushed was 'Endeavour', also the name
of one of the books written about the adventure. Starting to feel like we have
it easy now??
