I never needed any sort of sealant on my 650, the Y-boots just shove in there. As long as the boots aren't deformed and fit snugly in their openings they shouldn't allow any air leakage. As far as I know the U-shaped metal bit is just there to add support and keep boot from collapsing but perhaps somebody here knows better than I do. The trick is to connect the Y ends to the carbs first and clamp them down, you may need to soften them with a hair dryer first. Then slide the airbox forward to meet the boots. You can use a ratchet strap from the frame and back around the airbox to snug it up. Then tighten everything down.
