1986 Nighthawk S .  20K miles in great shape.  When I put it away at the end of 
last season (fresh oil / filter, full tank of stabilized gas, drained-carbs), 
all was well.  Return to service this season, all remained well except it has a 
new and distinct mechanical-knock at idle.  It clears up completely at ~ 1500 
rpm and above.  I doesn’t sound (to my ears) like it’s valve-noise.  Could be 
cam chain / tensioner related.  I’ve recorded the sound but the recording does 
not present the actual sound well.  Any thoughts ?  Thanks.

I got you buddy. 

My bike smokes when I take it out of storage. Runs a little rich. 
I had learned to repair vintage bikes when I used one as a daily driver. It was 
fix it or ride my bike!

The nighthawk, when all is well, is like the toyota corolla. It just runs 
perfectly, and other than the low charging at idle rpms, the bike never dies so 
long as you change the oil at 1000 miles every time.

I got a junker for 250, cleaned the carbs, sorted out some jumbled coils and 
wires, removed a gallon of water from the oil ( I think some yahoos drove it 
into a lake) and removed a chipmunks nest
from the airbox. I had a buy a used CDI to solve my ignition issues. Turned out 
that was the problem. two years later some plug wires and plug boots became a 
must buy as well.

I ran it with foam filters for a whole year before I figured out how to remount 
the airbox rubbers without breaking them. 

The bike IS sensitive to air volume. Because it is so reliable, there is no 
room for error in terms of how much air flow reaches each cylinder, so do make 
sure your filter is properly installed...

with a cheap inline filter the PO had installed and I had the same problem with 
it cutting out after a while on the freeway. Pull over and let it sit and it
