I think you should find the strainer tube that goes over the feed tube on your petcock. The reason why; if any chunks of rust or debris floats down and into the gas inlet orifice, it could restrict the flow of gas, or stop gas delivery all together. The in-line fuel filter is a secondary filter, and isn't really needed, as long as you have the original filter tube installed on the petcock. So, I say buy one, and install it.
