Sure, use center-weighted metering unless you are shooting a front-lit subject that has low-to-moderate contrast. I've read a lot about adjusting to the D80's method of matrix metering, and it does not like to shoot the way I like to shoot. It wants to preserve shadows under the focus point at all costs. So I hardly ever use it, anymore.
