I'm a bit lost as to why this is a problem its very well known that
Nikon set there DSLR meters to protect the highlights.
The best way to look at this is just like any other meter , its a meter
as long as it reads the same every time that's all you need the rest is
up to you the image maker.
YOU chose the exposure YOU like, not the meter, the meter is there to
help you get close quickly. The speed limit states 60mph but its raining
and the roads icy? to I really have to use the speed limit or my
judgement and slow down?
In some ways I wish people would go back to using a meter as they did
with film and understand what the light is doing and how the film/sensor
will record that light, and not just assume the meter is always right.

Hello,
I have had my D80 for a year now, and I want to pinpoint some things I
noticed; I have used the bodywith the following lenses, mostly:
Nikon:
20mm/2.8 AFD
50mm/1.4 AFD
135mm/2 AFD
Sigma 28-70/2.8 AF
-The camera has a tendency to badly expose (in Matrix metering):
Highlights get blown out, dark colors next to each other get ill-separated
I have therefore resorted to underexposing 1/3 stop, but this does not
change much.
Any ideas how I could get rid of this problem, or is this a generally
known issue?
