The D80 does anything but protect the highlights. All cameras with the 420 pixel Color Matrix Meter II tend to expose hot and blow highlits as well as being biased towards whatever's under the active focus point, but the D80's meter tends to do this worse than the other cameras, the primary issue being excessive bias towards the focus points for exposure, not the 1/3 of a stop hot exposure.
