I am running into a problem with inconsistent information from Nikon
and other sources about the possibility of using a teleconverter with
a recently purchased Nikon AF VR-Nikkor 80-400 mm f4.5-5.6 D
lens. Any information from list members who have successfully used a
teleconverter with this lens would be very much appreciated.
Please note that I am not worried about the loss of automatic
functions (AE, AF, VR etc). Nor am I concerned about the loss of one
stop due to a 1.4X teleconverter. I only want to be confident that I
can use the lens with the TC-14A converter I bought for this purpose
without causing damage to either component.
The lens is to be used on a D200 body.
Here are the inconsistencies I have encountered.
(1) When I wrote to the Nikon customer support folk, I was told the
following: "The lens is not compatible with any teleconverters and
using the lens with a teleconverter may damage it."
(2) The manual does not help much as it only indicates which
teleconverters should NOT be used. It states "Do not use the AF-I
Teleconverters TC-14E/TC-20E or the AF-S Teleconverters TC-14EII/TC-20EII."
(3) Nikon USA
(http://nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/lenses/TC/AFTeleconverter.pdf)
presents a chart that shows that this lens can be used with the
TC-201 teleconverter, although it warns that occasional vignetting may occur.
(4) However, the equivalent chart at Nikon Canada
(http://www.nikon.ca/pdf/brochures/lenses.pdf) suggests that the lens
can be used with the TC-201 AND the TC-14A (again with the same
warning about vignetting). The Nikon Imaging website at
http://www.nikon-image.com/eng/Lineup/af_spec(0208).pdf shows the same thing.
(5) Uwe Steinmueller's website
(http://www.outbackphoto.com/reviews/equipment/Nikon_VR_80_400/Nikon_VR_80_400_TC_14A.html)
not only recommends the use of the TC-14A with this lens but shows
results of using the combination and even a picture of the
lens-teleconverter duo in use.
(6) Various photo sites (commercial and otherwise) indicate that the
TC-14A can be used with the 80-400 mm lens. One example is

Help! Thank you for any help anyone can provide.
