dear 4_stroke, I am not sure that this is the right venue to discuss pros and cons of a Pentax. However, I will contribute one sentence or two, and hope to avoid the Off The Topic filter... ;-)
I used an old manual Pentax P30 when I was a penniless student, and a lens or two stayed with me after I've started using Nikon in mid-90ies, from FG through F60 through to F80s. I took a Pentax DSLR diversion because, at the time of me going digital, it was an easier, smaller and cheaper camera for me to use that what Nikon had to offer *then*. Pentax was also considerably cheaper and, finally, it was not a Canon. Pentax DSLR bodies offer backward K-mount compatibility, including metering with old manual lenses. You can use manual lenses even when your eyesight is not 100%, because the camera will indicate to you in the viewfinder that the subject is in focus when it is, and may be set to allow the shutter to fire only when the focus was achieved, even if it is a manual focus lens. It did not have to be a K100D, but that is what I got as replacement when the initial body (a DS2) died prematurely. Today I would have chosen K200D or possibly rather the K7, but it really is off the topic to be discussed away from the Nikon list. Today these issues may be minor, as Nikon bodies moved forward. However, it uniquely worked for me then: I had modern Nikon lenses but did not like the then Nikon DSLR body (D70). I also had one or two Pentax lenses (and bought some more, as they are 'cheap as chips', as we say in New Zealand). And I was (and still am) happy with the Pentax in the meantime.
