Based on my limited understanding (I'm not a historian obviously), the
establishment of early civilisation (particularly the Han dynasty and Romans),
often entailed a loss of freedom, especially for women, promoted slavery, and
increased weekly hours worked when compared to more nomadic hunter gatherer
societies. Part of the establishment of rules and dictates has to do with the
fact that, as social creatures, we tend to run into problems when groups grow
large (popular number is around 150 persons). At a certain point, the
interpersonal connections that can be maintained with smaller groups and that
help guide civil interactions, errode. In its place I feel that we do need some
set of shared principles and systems. I work at a public library which has a
history dealing with censorship. I sincerely hope and also expect that blanket
censorship won't occur. Maybe I have too much faith or maybe you not enough.
