This is quite cool, however it does seem very buggy at the moment, would be interesting to see where this project goes.
The issue is that the nature of Gravatar is the idea of having a central place to store everyones account info so any site can use their profile pictures etc. Maybe an OpenID-like approach should be used, federated storage of profile pictures, or a more simple approach, people just paste a link to a cdn which contains the profile pic they want displayed on their profile, however this could come with some security issues, especially tracking of ips and the number of times a browser fetches the profile picture!
