Alternative to gravatar for the forums?

Man it doesn't matter if it is self hosted, or on some cloud, it doesn't change 
the fact that you are not focused on privacy if you are storing analytical data 
based on your userbase. If you respect their privacy, you don't need to analyse 
your userbase!
