Well, XLR gives you a balanced connection, while the Jack connection is 
unbalanced. Unbalanced connection = electromagnetic interference. Note that 
on-board audio interfaces are pretty weak too.

My current setup: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 1st generation (includes a microphone, 
the audio interface and headphones) + [a 
windscreen](https://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tbone_windschutz_ws60.htm), which is 
even better than popkiller. I also use Yamaha HS8 studio monitors but that's 
not really important for podcasts.

Music in background is good. Not sure about ambient music. Give me some time 
and I will make some simple beats that you can use in your video sessions.
