Gabrielle, Welcome to the world of Nisus Software. I'll reply to your other message on
Nisus Writer Demo in another message.

My answers will be put under each question.

I have used Nisus Email [ NE ] in both OS 9 and OS X incarnations since they came out.
Makes it nearly 3 years I guess.

Previously I used Outlook Express in OS 9 but discarded it; I've looked at Apple's
Mail.app in OX S but, somehow, it did not feel right; I've never used Eudora or
Netscape's mail.

Nisus Email is, I suspect, an application which got to a certain development stage
where its ability to handle all sorts of incoming mail and interpret them correctly
was perfected, but then due to engineering restraints at Nisus Software, it was
necessary to put all efforts into Nisus Writer for OS X. [This is my personal view.]

Having said that, I find the advantages of NE X far outweigh the disadvantages which
include-

having an individual file created for every message;

being able to preview a list of all messages on my ISP's server before I download them;

being able to Delete a message without downloading it because I feel it may be spam or
contain an attachment with a virus or because someone has sent me a 5 MB jpeg photo of
their pet cat;

knowing that every attachment is separated from its email and placed in the
~/Documents/Nisus Email/Attachments Received/ folder and that an Attachment Sent also
has its own folder;

being able to create a new Contact by selecting the URL, typing Command-B and adding a
personal Greeting and Signature for them as well as having a Backup Contacts list as a
Nisus Writer text file which is updated whenever a new contact is added, and if the
original Contacts file is damaged [and I've not heard of this happening] all the
back-up contact names can be used to create a brand new set of contacts by Select +
Command-B;

being able to open downloaded messages in another OS X word processor [Text Edit say]
allows me to Command-click on a URL to got to the web. This cannot be done yet in NE X;

and so on.

----

but....

and there is always a but.

Although I write all my email using NE's Quick Message window, I am prepared to put up
its very modest word-processing capabilities. Vertical scrolling has always been
fairly basic; no spell checker; beware of hitting the Enter key or the message
vanishes [because NE thinks you are saving the message before sending.] and so on. I
live with these.

I'm confused too but at least I had used NE under OS 9 and the instructions have not
been changed since; well, the last time I looked that was the case. Most of what needs
to be done really is there but you have to read it carefully. With any luck, the
forthcoming Nisus Writer X will allow us to use it to write emails and then send them
seamlessly through a plug-in for Nisus Email. This can be done now but with NW in OS 9
still it is difficult.

I leave it to other users to comment.

There is no Forward button in NE.

The idea is that if you wish to Forward the same message, or even a part of it, Select
the text you wish to send, drag the selection over the Floating Post Office [that
wierd little windoid which pops up on the top left corner of your screen] and release
the mouse button. The FPO opens and you move the cursor over the FPO window to the
contact's icon until it shows *Edit*, not *Send*, and release the mouse again. NE then
opens an editing window for you to check that the details are correct. Make any
corrections/amendments and hit the Enter key. To check that the mail will go on the
next connection, click on the main menu bar Emails>Show Queued Emails. You can open
the message and edit it again if you wish.

There is the ability to import Contacts from Eudora. Click on the FPO; click and hold
on the final New Contact *clouds* or *Post Boxes* [shift-click to alternate the
appearance]
and select Create New Contact. At the top there is a choice to Import All which, for
me, asks do I want to import all Eudora addresses.

In the Manual, there is something about importing Contacts.

However, if your current email client can give you a list of addresses as a TEXT file
where each address is separated by a carriage return, try selecting one or two and use
the Command-C then Command-B trick. This will give you a new contact for each address.

If you have, say, several persons to whom you send a common email, say family, then
collect all of these together separated by a space or comma [not carriage returns]
with a carriage return after the last name, do Select-and-Copy-and-Paste them into the
Email Address field of the New Contact window. Then add Greetings and Signature.

How many? I have close to 150 not including those collected into groups. I don't think
there is a limit.

>- Can you keep a message and delete any attachment that came with it?

You sure can. See my reasons for not wanting to change fro NE.

NE has a rather uncomplicated way of creating filters; a method called Rules in
Outlook Express. Inside your Nisus Email folder where you already have several folders
such as Attachments Received/Sent, create a New Folder. Call it, as an example, *Nisus
Interactive*. From the Main Menubar, open Emails>Filters... It is pretty obvious how
to fill in the fields [e.g. Search for: nisus-interactive.] but the main problem has
been solved - you have already created the folder into which all mail from this list
will be placed.

That is where the message will go but any attachment wil be put into the Attachments
Received folder without you doing anything. The message and the attachment will stay
there until you delete it manually, although there is a Preferences to delete mail
after a time which you can select.

You will need to remove attachments by normal Mac methods - move it to the Trash.

The email message can be deleted in different ways. The easy way is to view it in the
Show Folder List which opens from the Emails menu, click the line item and the hit the
Delete key. Or, you can find the message in its folder and Trash it.

Because every message is a separate file, and a file in TEXT format as well, you can
save them to a CD and read them anytime.

Browsing the Archives? I don't follow. If you mean those on your hard drive, NE is
perfect.

If you mean archives stored on a server somewhere, you possibly need a standard
web-browser such as OmniWeb or Internet Explorer. I never advise the use of Netscape
because it tries to be all things - browser and email client. I believe in horses for
courses - browsers for browsing and email clients for email. Archives of nisus-hub are
at YahooGroups and you _may_ need to have a Yahoo ID and password; archive of
nisus-interactive are with Nisus Software and I've not tried it. Nisus at Dartmouth
would have its own archives.

Sorry to be so long-winded but you asked a lot of questions.

Good luck with Nisus
