As for losing the formatting: one thing the current release does not support in any form is automatic styles. If the document sent to you used styles in Word to do most of its formatting, then this will probably not show up correctly in Nisus Writer Express.
The good news is: this will be fixed in the next release! In fact, we will provide full support for styles and then some. This should dramatically improve our compatibility with Word files.
(Incidentially, we have invested a lot of time to make styles easy to understand, set up, and use. If you work with styles very often now in other word processors, you will really appreciate the time it saves you working in Express; if you don't really understand styles, I think this will make them much more approachable.)

Perhaps you have designated the .doc format to be opened in Express. Check it in the Finder with Get Info. the "Open with" option lets you choose what application your Mac will look for depending on the extension.
1.2. Double-clicking it opens it (after a long time) in NWE, with some formatting lost:
-bold, italics, underlining...
Don't know what to say about this. I get .doc files made on Windows machines from people every day, and get excellent results when opening in Express. You should of course save a file as Express (rtf) right away after opening, and work on that.
