Hi Sander. You can override the master device in your .soundrc file:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-lib/+bug/33736 goto #4 (and #5). I'm glad to see that you have trouble with Alsa as well. So it's not only me having trouble. It *should* enable software mixing automatically. I've read it somewhere on the wiki. That's the reason why I'd like to get OSSv4 working. You don't need pulseaudio then. Less overhead. However I could'nt make it work yet. Anyway good luck!
