The work mentioned at IJCAI was quite old (1960's) whereas the work mentioned at NAACL was from 1999 and presented at ACL. In our Ijcai case, the relationship was there, but it wasn't nearly as direct. But still, it's a sobering feeling when somebody says something like this!
