Among the things I'll be doing at the AAAI conference in San Jose later this month...I'm going to be a "faculty panelist" at the Doctorial Consortium:
http://www.csc.ncsu.edu/faculty/stamant/dc/dc04.html I was a student participant in this event in 1997, so it's rather nice to be sitting on the other side a few years later. Students make 25 minute presentations on their research work (PhD level usually) and then a panel of faculty experts (plus me :) make insightful comments about the work, and things they might want to try and focus on or improve or develop further. I really recommend participating in this event if you get a chance. AAAI is very generous with student travel support, especially if you participate in the doctoral consortium. You also meet some of your "classmates" from other institutions, and those can turn out to be lasting relationships. For example, Mehran Sahami was a participant in the DC the same year I was, and we've stayed in touch ever since as a result. He's the fellow at Google that gave the very wonderful talk at IJCAI in Acapulco that I summarized a while back. Rob Holte was my faculty mentor in 1997, and I saw him again in 2003 at IJCAI in Acapulco and we both remembered each other quite well.
