I don't know that people would make their personal conversations available, but chat rooms are generally an open forum of communication, and I would think that those could be "mined" to create transcripts, etc. However, they tend to be so chaotic that I don't know how much useful data there would be. I think conversations between 2 people are probably much more interesting than the general free for all that sometimes exists in chat rooms. However, sometimes chat rooms are fairly "small" and become 2 person conversations for a while. You can think of chat rooms as being the messenger equivalent of usenet data (now known as google groups) serving as a substitute for email.
