Saiyam will describe a proposed reorganized of the NSP measures into an object oriented hierarchy. So, it would be useful if you could review a little bit about NSP and the measures included in the package, so we are looking to get your contributions and insights into how this should best be done. The idea is to reduce code replication as much as possible, and also to make the hierarchy be conceptually meaningful, that is measures that are derived from other measures should be reflected in that hierarchy. As an example of the sorts of relationships we hope to convey in the new hierarchy, consider the following. The phi coefficient (phi) is essentially equivalent to the chi squared measure (x2). So... x2 = npp * phi * phi or phi = sqrt (x2/npp) where npp is the sample size. Right now the relationship between these measures is very unclear in the code, and we want to create a hierarchy where such relationships are clear and easy to understand. This will also make it much easier to invent or implement new measures. The same kinds of relationships are true of left and right Fisher's test, and the log likelihood ratio (ll) and true mutual information (tmi), and perhaps there are others as well. So, please take a look at the measures in nsp prior to this meeting, and come prepared to discuss such issues. If you are not currently at UMD (this message is being sent to the ngram/NSP mailing list, for example) please feel free to contribute any thoughts you have to the mailing list.
