So I have been trying to set up wireless at my house on one of my Linux machines (laptop) and it's been an adventure. Here's some of what I have learned...these are misc notes meant mostly as a reminder to me, but you might find them helpful someday...if you aren't interested don't read this, there is nothing else except wireless trickery below.
The Computer in question is a Dell Latitude D800. It has Fedora Core 4 installed, and I am also running Knoppix 4.0.2 from the CD. I found out the wireless card for my Dell D800 by running lspci >From that I saw it was an ... Intel Pro Wireless LAN 2100 3A Mini PCI Adaptor Both Knoppix 4.0.2 and RedHat Fedora Core 4 seem to include the proper driver from Intel, ipw2100. You can check and see if this is installed via modinfo ipw2100 modprobe -l If the driver wasn't included, I could have gotten it and installed it. But thank goodness I didn't have to do that. http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net/ Here's a very nice description of setting up the ipw2100 : http://frealek.dotnode.com/blog/view/177 After a little fiddling around, things seem to be working on Knoppix, but Fedora Core 4 remains a mystery. I will say that in general Knoppix deteced my wireless network immediately, whereas Fedora Core never really wanted to do that. So, maybe I can get by with just using Knoppix for my wireless access for now.
