Saiyam suggested that I might like to try out ubuntu linux, as that automatically detected his wireless network, and he has hardware similar to mine.
So, I went ahead and installed ubuntu, and indeed, it set up wireless automatically and without so much as a single ifconfig command or look at kwifimanager. And certainly not a single pump command (my new favorite command name, it means "pump" your dhcp server for an ip address) I have heard good things about ubuntu before, and I see why. So, if you want to fight your way through iwlist commands and so forth, you can use knoppix or worse yet fedora core 4.
