and where you have come from - students who start off in elite schools as
undergraduates tend not to be so afraid of places like CMU, etc. but the
rest of us are usually too intimidated. But, in the end, it's often the
students who come from the less well known schools that do the best,
because they do not have the arrogance and resultant laziness that
sometimes comes with a priviledged academic past.
Sorry to put it so bluntly, but some of the most inept PhD students I
have observed come with splendid pedigrees and the attitude that they are
better than the rest of us. Usually they are not. :)
Fortunately in my 4 years at CMU I am yet to come across a graduate student who struck me as anything but exceedingly humble and exceedingly hard working. I suspect that the high concentration of extremely smart people (students and faculty both) around you all the time is a constant reminder that no one is ever "better than the rest".
