More about India, and I guess the first thing to say is that I sent you the wrong URL for my Hyderabad pictures. Here they are, I hope...
http://good-times.webshots.com/album/557067418kiykTP So, one of my missions while I was in Hyderbad was to acquire some Hindi movies, because, well, I generally like them but have no idea of what I should watch.... So, I did a little polling before I left and came up with the following list of recommended movies...part of the reason for telling you about this is so that I don't forget any of these, and also to solicit further suggestions if you have them, of movies that are particular favorites... Now these are the ones on the list that I got... Rang de Basanti Lago Raho Munnabhai Dilwale Dulhanya Le Jaoyense Dil Chahta Hai Roja And these are the ones that I didn't find but am still interested in, and I'm sure I've just made a mess of spelling, but I think I'm within 3 or 4 edits in most cases ... Omkara Iqbal Dor Hyderabad Blues Lagaan Munnabhai MBBS Raincoat Bombay Satya Ghatak Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander Vaastav Lak shya As it turned out on the flight from Minneapolis to Amsterdam (as I was going) they were showing Lago Ragho Munnabhai as one of the films, so I got to see that even before arriving in India, and well, I enjoyed it very much. I was actually hoping to locate a black market of sorts for movies and software in Hyderabad, simply as an investigation of sorts, not for making any sort of purchases of course, but was told that there wasn't too much of that in Hyderabad, perhaps in Dehli though. When I go to Mexico City I visit a few streets that are thriving markets for movies and software, you can get Windows 200X for about 5 bucks, and movies for 1 buck a piece, possibly less if you are in the mood to haggle, so well, I wanted to compare that with the situation in India, but, no luck. So, about food...yum. :) I became more or less addicted to dosas while I was in Hyderbad, and extremely addicted to biryani...so most days featured a dosa for breakfast, and then biryani for lunch or dinner...and there was a lot of fresh fruit that I really liked too...especially figs, fresh figs, which I have had from time to time here in the USA, but had them all the time in Hyderabad...and by fresh I mean they have not been dried or processed or whatever happens to figs that makes them very sweet and rather sticky, these were the fresh fruit as picked from the .... tree I would suppose. And freshly squeezed grape juice, that was quite nice, and absolutely impossible to find in the USA as far as I know, we have Welch's concentrate, which I just don't like too much (too sweet) but the freshly squeezed graph juice that was nice. And papayas. I love papayas. So the food was good. Very good. The weather was lovely actually. Sunny, warm, very bright. It go darker earlier than I expected though, I think by about 6pm it would be rather dark, and that actually posed some problems for getting out and around since the conference did not officially end each day until 7pm (they worked us like slavedrivers!) so by the time we'd get back to the hotel it was 8 or 8:30pm and that was just too late to do much of anything except have dinner and then go to bed. I can't remember if I explained this or not, but the convention center was on the outer edges of Hyderabad, and while there was one hotel there it wasn't large enough to accomodate everyone, so many people (myself included) stayed at hotels closer to the center of the city, which was in many ways nicer, except for the commuting it required. Well, let me send this and continue my sporadic reporting as the days go by. Ted -- Ted Pedersen http://www.d.umn.edu/~tpederse
