Hi Ted, I am enjoying reading your India trip postings, and am glad that you had an enjoyable experience! Your mention of Dosas and Hyderabadi Biryani has made me hungry already :-) As you might know already, the Hyderabadi Biryani is known to be the most authentic Biryani that you get in India.
The Kumbh Mela that you mention from the movie below is actually a very large scale holy gathering that is held at 4 places (one of which is Nasik) in the span of every 12 years. The mythological story behind it is that while the Gods and Demons were at war over nectar (amrit), drops of nectar fell on earth at the 4 places where today the Kumbh Mela is held. I would also recommend the following movies to add to your don't-have-but-might-watch-sometime category: Black (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375611/) -- One of the best performances of Amitabh Bacchan and Rani Mukerjee, this movie is about a deaf-mute-blind girl and her teacher. Hera Pheri (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0242519/) -- A hilarious comedy (although some humor might be more societal) Paheli (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0451850/) -- A Rajasthani folk-tale, but rich in Rajasthan's (the north Indian state with the Thar desert) tradition/drapery and has a generally good feel to it. The above movies are relatively new and perhaps easier to get. Sholay (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073707/) -- This is an old but a smashingly super hit movie. Shatranj Ke Khilari (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076696/) -- This one is old too, I saw this recently and liked it very much. It reminds me to some extent of Pulp Fiction type narration (although this movie predates Pulp Fiction). Its one out of the few commercial movies made by the famous Indian director Satyajeet Ray. The older ones are certainly going to be a lot harder to find, especially with English sub-titles. But if you do find them, they are worth watching. BTW, probably the most heavily recommended movie of all these was Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, which was great. I have seen it twice so far, and it's really quite dramatic and romantic and very funny (the piano scene is perhaps my favorite, if you have seen it...)
