I've recently been doing a little reading on reproducible results, and
came upon a very appealing point of view in the following :

Jon Claerbout and Martin Karrenbach, Electronic documents give
reproducible research a new meaning, in Proc. 62nd Ann. Int. Meeting
of the Soc. of Exploration Geophysics, 1992, pp. 601-604.

The idea is wonderfully simple (at least to visualize) - if you have a
table of results, have a push button in the electronic version of the
paper that lets reader and author alike reproduce the results.
Presumably this would also let the reader see the code, data, etc (and
not just run a canned sort of demo)

Clearly this isn't a simple thing to do, but the technology certainly
exists where it is at least possible, so seems like it's worth having
out there as a kind of gold standard for what it would mean for a
paper to be reproducible (it would quite literally be true, the paper
itself reproduces its own results...)

In addition, I recently read found the following paper, which includes
a bit of argument in favor of reproducible results, and also does a
small case study in the author's discipline which is rather
interesting...

J. Kovačević, "How to encourage and publish reproducible research,"
Proc. IEEE Int. Conf. Acoust., Speech, and Signal Proc., Honolulu, HI,
Apr. 2007, pp. IV:1273-1276.

Enjoy,
Ted
