If you're talking about a consumer level UPS w/ a USB port, there's a good chance these days that it supports the USB HID standard for UPS devices. I've got an APC BackUPS XS 1000 that I've been quite happy with. Plug and Play on Mac and works just fine under Linux as well using apcupsd or NUT.
