Hey gang, A quick word about vol_id <partition> [must run with root privileges]
I've been messing around with a multiple disk system. The fstab has the hard disk partitions labeled by Universal Unique Identifier, UUID. The advantage of UUID is that the boot loader and fstab can find these partitions even if you move disks around or add new disks to the system (like I did). My fstab was very thoughtfully annotated with the usual /dev/sd?n nomenclature commented out followed by the UUID lines. But I set about adding even more disks that I wished to reference by UUID in said fstab. The vol_id command came to the rescue. Of course I found it quickly by Googling Ubuntu UUID. Yes, UUID does aid the boot function but one must still remember to keep the boot loader and the system BIOS square, plum and level with one's intent. I didn't even have to boot from a rescue disk :) Howard White --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "NLUG" group.
