Itanium is long dead By the time you are spending the money to through that all together, I would suggest maybe going the server board route. Also depending on the memory needs, you might want to think about the Intel versus AMD memory arch.
Specifically that Intel still runs all the memory access out the frontside bus. AMD has a bus per CPU package to memory. Downside to AMD is that you have to populate multiple CPUs with identical memory. Upside is that if you workload is decently split up such that the work for a core has it's own memory, it can be allocated out of the attached memory and make memory access less contentious on other work. Also consider multiple dual cores as a way of reducing cost and if you are able to shut down a package during off hours to reduce cooling and power requirements. I would also suggest buying from www.8anet.com. That is who we buy a lot of our work servers from. A lot of the "ACME" brands are actually supermicro machines. Critch ----- "Mark J.
