I did it once and would recommend it for the learning process. It is a looong process though so allow yourself plenty of time! There's a certain reward when you get to the point of booting up your new partition and running on all your hand rolled software.
LFS is more than just a bunch of compiling - but DO NOTE that there is going to be a TON of compiling going on. You might think you should just use an old box for this, but a faster processor and adequate RAM should be considered. That said it's still going to be a long process. If I were to do this today I'd suggest doing the whole thing on a VM. Download virtual box and make the virtual HD big enough for an OS install times two. One thing I did was to find someone else interested, kinda like a gym buddy that will keep you on task and give a second set of eyes for when you have a typo. Enjoy!
