Doesn't GNUCash have an invoicing system? I was thinking it did...

I actually used to use a DOS program, InvoiceStore
(http://www.softstore.net/invoice/).  It's more targeted towards
retail sales of physical items, but works OK for service stuff too. I
don't know if it can export in a Quickbooks (compatible) format or
not...
