I've used OpenLDAP and 389/Fedora DS/Red Hat DS/SunOne/iPlanet quite a
bit.  At work we use RHDS currently.  It has the advantage of
Multi-master replication available.  That also comes with added
complexity.  OpenLDAP is much lighter in weight.  RHDS (and the like)
are very robust and can handle millions of objects without issues.
Our directory at work is very small, but the MMR was required to meet
uptime requirements.  Either way, I recommend phpLDAPAdmin as a
front-end tool, or Apache Directory Studio.

We try to make everything authenticate via LDAP.  Linux hosts,
websites, svn repos, monitoring tools, etc all are normally pretty
easy to setup.  Databases, like MySQL, Oracle etc can have their own
headaches.
