WARNING: POTENTIALLY OFF-TOPIC! I really like using OpenSolaris derivatives for storage, especially with the ZFS filesystem, COMSTAR (if you want iSCSI, Fibre Channel or SAN-type functionality) and other advanced features.
Check out www.opensolaris.org and www.nexenta.org. If you like Ubuntu, you'll *really* like Nexenta (GNU/OpenSolaris). I imagine it'll work great on that Athlon system...
