I've always had *great* luck with the rt2500 chipsets. The older
ralink stuff is just excellent, in my opinion.
If you're looking for a desktop card, I would definitely go with one
of the older WMP54g's from linksys, or a belkin F5D7000.

Also oddly enough there are these prism54 usb dongles that work
incredibly well with ndiswrapper for me (see d-link dwl-g120 and Dell
1450 dual-band usb dingles).

Basically, on the desktop side, as long as you stay away from the
newer broadcom stuff, you should be dandy.
