I think you would be best off using NVIDIA. Now which one will send you down just as big a search hole. NVIDIA supports their drivers under linux very well, and windows is still a given. For gaming, you are going to want to track down much memory, and may need to pay as much attention to the kind and speed of the memory as much as how much memory is on the card. Of course each of the fiddly knobs is really just an adjuster on the price tag. Stopping at a $100 NVIDIA card isn't a bad point.
