I have been moving slowly away from programming the past year and a half into
sculpting and art. I have started a statuary and design company for both art
pieces and architectural pieces. Unfortunately sculpting is not like the other
arts. It is very expensive. I was faced with a decision; buy software or buy
clay, molding and casting materials. Silicone is $130 a gallon after shipping,
so that made the choice for me. Admittedly, even though I have used Linux as my
primary OS for the past, well, almost decade, I was a bit apprehensive to do
(learn)painting and other graphic arts using Linux. It isn't traditionally
known for professional graphics, with the exception of blender. Ironically I'm
not using blender at this point (I plan to though). I decided to stick with
Linux after some research and testing and I have been pleasantly surprised with
the outcome. The graphics tools have come a long way. GIMP still has a ways to
go, but that is why I have
started donating small amounts of money to them. The tools on the slate for
the next release are very impressive and will raise that bar a bit.
With all of that said, I would like to do a presentation at some point
illustrating the tools I use and the process involved to show how they have
helped me on this journey. I use Ubuntu Studio 10.4 on my desktop, but have the
tools loaded on my laptop for when I am out and about. I would not be able to
do the next meeting since I am preparing for a meeting with a distribution
company, but I should be able to do the following month's meeting. Assuming
there is any interest.
Here are the tools I use on a regular basis:
*Ubuntu Studio (sometimes I get a bug and want to write music too)
*Inkscape
*GIMP
*Scribus
*MyPaint
*A Wacom tablet
*Agave
*PDFs, PDFs, PDFs (no problems printing them off site)
*Some minor scripting (Python) for statue sizes and proportions. I plan on
making many more as I move along.
*Of course the traditional LAMP for web and inventory organization.
*Accounting is via spreadsheet at present. We can talk about that too. How do
you run a business completely on Linux and OSS? I am trying to figure that out.
Thanks,
Greg
