I have had pretty decent luck using mp3gain. Since all it does is add meta tags to the file it wont affect the bitrate.

However, some of the music was recorded at a low volume, some at a higher volume. This means that I sometimes turn up the player volume in order to hear a low-volume tune, only to have to turn the volume back down again later to avoid blasting my eardrums. Can anyone recommend a utility program, preferably on Linux, that could be used to save a low-volume piece of music to a new file, with a higher average volume but without distorting how the music sounds? -- John F.
