I feel your pain. I've been having the same issues. For some reason Ubuntu 10.10 just worked best for me. I recently tried arch, which was great until the first update when everything broke. Had no luck with mint 11-12. I have yet to try fedora, but it seems like all the big Linux distros are all headed into the same terrible direction.
